DECEMBER 29TH
FEAST OF THE HOLY FAMILY
Abraham and Sarah, Joseph and Mary, saw new life and were
filled with unconditional love. Parents regularly experience this feeling upon entering a
childs room to gaze at their little miracle. Hearts swell with thankful joy even
though the tiny life does nothing more that sleep. Even in worrisome times, a child is an
act of faith and love and our hope for the future.
We tend to fret about events. Our imagination works overtime to
increase our anxiety: What kind of world are we bringing our child into? Surely , Joseph
and Mary experienced similar fears. They lived in a land occupied by a foreign power and
were aware of zealots who called for uprising to overthrow Romes imperial yoke. What
were their thoughts when Simeon told Mary that the child was chosen by God for "the
falling and the rising of many in Israel" and that "a sword" would pierce
Marys heart?
Only faith can help a family cope with such news. The birth of
Jesus was the advent of the worlds deliverance. The natural joy of this new life is
transcended by the ecstasy of the resurrection. Pain and suffering are forgotten, replaced
by the joy and promise of everlasting life. Like the love of our parents and of God, this
love surrounds us. Our human family is forever enriched by Jesus, the Incarnation of God.
Devotion to the Holy Family flourished in the Renaissance. The
leading artists of the time Michelangelo, Raphael, El Greco, Rembrandt, Rubens to
name a few often portrayed the Holy Family in their work. When this feast day was
instituted in 1921, it was originally assigned to the third Sunday after Christmas. It is
now observed on the first Sunday following Christmas, unless Christmas itself falls on a
Sunday, in which case Holy Family is celebrated on December 30. |
New Years Day is the Feast of
the Solemnity of Mary, the Mother of God. This is a Holyday of Obligation. Masses at St.
Joseph are as follows:
TUESDAY, DECEMBER 31ST AT 5:00P.M.AND MIDNIGHT. On New
Years Day the Mass will be WEDNESDAY@ 8:00A.M. MASS WILL BE 9:30 AT ST. ANNE. This
should allow everyone the opportunity to celebrate this Holyday of Obligation.
Both St. Joseph and St. Anne Parishes wishes to extend a warm
welcome to all the visitors to our parish during the holiday season. If you would like to
become a member, please contact the Rectory, Monday through Friday 8:30 a.m. till 3:30p.m.
NEW MINISTRY SCHEDULES
The new schedule for Lectors, Special Ministers , Servers and
Ushers has been prepared. Please watch the bulletin in the coming weeks for your appointed
time to minister. If you are unable to get a bulletin on the weekend please stop by the
Rectory and pick up one.
EUCHARISTIC ADORATION
The Church and the world have a great need of Eucharistic
worship. Jesus waits for us in this sacrament of love. Let us be generous with our time in
going to meet Him in adoration and in contemplation that is full of faith and ready to
make reparation for the great faults and crimes of the world. May our adoration never
cease.
Pope John Paul II
The Blessed Sacrament will be exposed from 8:00a.m. until
4:00p.m., Friday, Jan.3rd. Benediction will be help at 5:00p.m. Someone should
be with the Blessed Sacrament at all times. Please give a few minutes back to God for all
that he has given to you. All people from St. Anne and St. Joseph are asked to come and
pray.
ATTENTION
Sr. Elaine AuBuchon, a School Sister of notre Dame, and Sr.
Gail Borgmeyer, a Pallotine Sister, who work with the Criminal Justice Ministry (CJM) of
the St. Vincent de Paul Society in St. Louis, will present for all the masses the weekend
of January 4. They will speak briefly after Mass about ministry needs that parishioners
might want to consider at the new prison. Some needs involve direct service within the
prison and others can be done at home.
