QUID PATAS
Since this is flu season and it has been left to each pastor to decide, I would make
the following observation and let you decide what you want to do.
We hold hands during the praying of the Lords prayer. Maybe you want to or maybe
not. We use various gestures for the sign of peace, from shaking hands, kissing and
embracing. During the flu season what do you want to do? You receive Holy Communion on the
tongue or on the hand. It has been recommended to receive it in the hands during this flu
season. What do you want to do? We receive the Eucharist under both kinds. During the flu
season, what do you want to do?

WHO WAS THE REAL
ST. NICHOLAS?
St. Nicholas was born at the end of the third century in
Asia Minor. His uncle, the archbishop of Myra in Lycia (southeast Turkey), ordained him
and appointed him abbot of a nearby monastery. Upon his uncle's death, Nicholas served as
bishop until his own death. He was imprisoned for preaching Christianity but was released
by the Emperor Constantine.
One popular legend involving St. Nicholas concerns a man who had
lost his fortune and was thinking of prostituting his three daughters to pay off his
debts. Nicholas heard of the mans situation and secretly threw a bag of gold into an
open window in the house. Twice more St. Nicholas helped the man in this way, only to be
revealed and thanked on the third effort. While our present-day idea of Santa Claus stems
from the legends of St. Nicholas, the Church thinks of him as a saint, a confessor of the
faith, and a holy bishop. We can learn from his generosity to the poor, and imitate his
secret acts of kindness to others.
A heartfelt "Thank You" to all who worked so hard
to prepare for our Christmas celebration: the Liturgical Assistants, our children who
participated in the procession, the many parishioners who cleaned, put up decorations,
donated toward the poinsettias for the alter, donated toward the "Giving Tree"
project, Christmas food baskets and who helped distribute them, and those who baked
"goodies" and organized the Shut-in and Nursing Home visits. May God bless each
of you! For all the good wishes, cards, and gifts that I received personally, in
expression of love and joy during this holiday season, I offer my sincere "Thank
You" Happy New Year!
Father John
SCRIPTURE
Luke1:26-38. Believing doesnt mean understanding.
Since the days of Abraham, God has given people mysterious
messages that defy reason but require faith. When Gabriel told Mary that she would give
birth to the Son of God, she couldnt help but wonder how that could happen. The
angels explanation didnt help. But instead of asking more, she simply said,
"Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord. Be it done to me according to your word"
(Luke 1:38).
Faith is not the same as understanding. In fact, some of
Gods truths are too deep for our limited human intelligence. Its best to
accept them with faith, humility, and simplicity. God tells us what we need to know when
he thinks we are ready to handle it. Instead of examining all of Gods truths, we can
concentrate on what we need to live them and gain eternal life. By directing our interests
and energy toward finding out what God wants for us, well gain the peace of doing
his will. Mary is our model of simple faith and obedience.
