STEWARDSHIP
Whoever loves me will keep my word,
says the Lord, and my Father will love him and we will come to him.
(John
14:23)
How do you show your love for God? Do you give your time, talent and treasure to keep
His word?
Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,
Three days after his seventh-eighth
birthday, the world witnessed the election of Pope Benedict XVI as Supreme Pontiff of the
Roman Catholic Church. Prior to his election,
Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger had desired to return one day to his native Germany and retire
from active ministry. God had other designs. Called by Jesus Christ to remain in active service
as the Servant of the Servants of God, the new pontiff acknowledged the limitations that
age imposed on him, but he confidently placed his talents and energy at the disposal of
the Church. His wisdom, joy and
steadfastness as an older Catholic are a blessing to us all.
Whether they are still active in an
apostolate or whether they have retired, numerous men and women religious in the
Archdiocese of Saint Louis have served the Church for many years with lives consecrated
totally to God. The annual collection for the Retirement
Fund for Religious, which
will take place on the weekend of November 5 and 6, is an opportunity for the Catholic
faithful to say thank you to our men and women religious for witnessing to the
primacy of the love of God.
Many of them are not as active as they
would like to be, but their prayers, sufferings, small services and sacrifices remain a
source of grace, from which the entire Church draws strength and encouragement.
As the cost of health care and living
expenses continue to rise, I appeal to you to respond to their urgent needs through your
donation to the Retirement
Fund for Religious next
Sunday. Thank you for your continued
generosity to our retired religious!
Asking Gods blessing upon you and
your homes, I remain
Yours
devotedly in Christ,
(Most Rev.) Raymond L. Burke
Archbishop of St. Louis
