BAGGAGE
Being a priest, I have moved an average of every five
years. Each time I move, I am amazed at how much junk I have accumulated in such a short
time. I usually throw away boxes of stuff that I know I’ll never need. That’s
the easy part.
How much junk have I accumulated in the spiritual part of my life?
How many grudges do I carry? How many unhealthy attitudes am I burdened with?
Moving time is a great opportunity to unload excess baggage. Can I
accept that every day is moving day?

WHY DO I HAVE TO GO TO CONFESSION TO A PRIEST? CAN’T I JUST TALK TO
GOD DIRECTLY?
The priest plays a critical role in helping us know that
God loves us and forgives us.
After his resurrection, Jesus gave the apostles the authority to
forgive sins. He said,"If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven; if you
retain the sins of any, they are retained" (John 20:23). This apostolic authority has
been conveyed to the bishop, who is a successor to the original Twelve. When a priest is
ordained, the bishop also gives the priest the authority to forgive sins in Jesus’
name.
Don’t forget… sin is not a private affair. By its
nature, sin means we chose to reject God’s will in favor of our own. Putting our
selfish or self-centered desires above the needs of others affects our families, our
communities and the Church as a whole. The priest represents the Church and the people we
have sinned against. So he is able to confer God’s forgiveness and that of our
community as well.
