REVEREND JOHN H. SCHNEIDER
40th ANNIVERSARY OF ORDINATION
Fr. John H. Schneider will celebrate his 40th Anniversary
of Ordination during the Sunday morning Mass at10:00am on May 4th.
Father John was born on October 2, 1942 and is the only child of
Marjorie M. (deceased) and Merlin A. Schneider. He was raised in Washington, Mo. and
attended St. Francis Borgia Grade School until the age of twelve. In 1954 the family moved
to St. Louis and upon arriving became members of St. Catherine of Sienna Church.
In response to Gods call to a religious vocation, John
entered the seminary in 1956 and was one of 13 boys that went to Prep High from the eighth
grade class of 21 boys. By the time college rolled around, he was the only St. Catherine
boy left. In the presence of God, his family and friends, he was ordained to the
Priesthood by the late Cardinal John J. Carberry on Saturday, May11, 1968 at the new
Basilica of St. Louis, in St. Louis, Mo. Reverend John Schneider offered his First Solemn
Mass on Sunday, May 12, 1968 at St. Catherine of Sienna Church, on Page and Leroy,
Pagedale, Missouri.
As an Archdiocesan priest, Fathers first assignment was St.
Genevieve du Bois, Warson Woods, Mo. He was active in the Youth Ministry, grade school
retreats and taught at Nerinx Hall and Villa Duchene high school. One year later he was
assigned to St. Catherine of Alexandria, Riverview Gardens, Mo. as associate pastor, under
the leadership of Reverend L. Schieber for five years. He moved to North American Martyrs,
Florissant, Mo. serving with Reverend Richard Nelke (of fond memory) for the next five
years. At this time, in addition to his other duties, he was appointed hospital chaplain
to Christian Northwest Hospital. This ministry would later become a more important part of
his priesthood. His first rural assignment was in DeSoto, Mo. at St. Rose of Lima as an
associate to Rev. John Hollaman who was later succeeded by Reverend Edward Hilgeman, a
familiar face to the parishioners of St. Joseph/St. Anne. At the end of five years it was
back to the city. First to Christ Prince of Peace, Manchester, Mo. and then to St. Martin
of Tours in Lemay, Mo. After a brief hiatus he served at Holy Rosary Parish in Warrenton,
Mo. with his dear friend Reverend Gene Brennan. Then it was to All Saints in St. Peters,
Mo. with the erudite, Reverend Ron Chochol. At the request of the late Archbishop John L.
May he received his first assignment as a pastor to St. Joseph/St. Anne. He arrived in
June 1991. In addition to his pastoral duties in the parishes he is Chaplain at the
Veterans Hospital, Jefferson Barricks, St.Louis, Mo., Chaplain at the Eastern Reception & Diagnostic
Correction Center in Bonne Terre, Mo. He is treasurer and past president of the Bonne
Terre Ministerial Alliance. He is also the representative of the Ministerial Alliance to
the Salvation Army Program in St. Francois County for seven years. Today, we are here to
celebrate the 40th year of his priestly journey. Let us keep him in our prayers as he
continues to work for the greater honor and glory of God. Father John we wish you good
health, a happy spirit and a long life!
