Annual Catholic Appeal
The Gospel passage from Saint John for the Third Sunday of
Easter is a most compelling scene. The evangelist tells the story of the apostles who, following the Resurrection of
Jesus, have gone back to their earthly jobs as fishermen. And they are not doing well.
They fished all night and caught nothing. At dawn Jesus appears and instructs them where
to find a catch and their nets are filled.
This story of a "successful fishing trip" is much more
than it first appears. Jesus directs the apostles to the place where they will make their
catch. He then shares their food with them. Finally he addresses Peter three times with a
dramatic and direct question, "Do you love me?"
The apostles days as fishermen are about to be over. Jesus
demonstrates the reality of his presence through the sharing of food. He makes clear that
without him they will not be successful as "fishers of men." And above all, he
now commissions Peter as shepherd with the words, "feed my sheep." Throughout
scripture we see the image of the Good Shepherd who will lay down his life for the flock.
We hear the sending of the apostles as shepherds and the warnings against false teachers
who are like devouring wolves. We are presented with the radical idea that the flock is
not complete if even one sheep is lost. This is the Church.
The Annual Catholic Appeal is often understood as a program that
helps those who are less fortunate. The Appeal might be seen as providing food, clothing
and shelter to those in material need, or counseling and health services to those in
physical or emotional need who cannot otherwise afford it.
That is only part of the story. They are only part of the Church.
The Appeal serves all who are in need not just the financially or materially poor.
The Appeal supports priests, teachers and seminarians.
The Appeal helps to make possible the widespread availability of
the sacramental life of the Church in our parishes.
The Appeal underwrites programs and services that bring
retreats, pro-life advocacy efforts and marriage preparation to people in all 186
parishes.
The Appeal supports Catholic religious education in elementary
schools and parish schools of religion.
The Appeal gives direct financial support to every Archdiocesan,
Parochial and Regional high school.
The flock that Peter was instructed to feed includes all of us. And, so does the
Annual Catholic Appeal.
