CHURCH WOMEN UNITED
WORLD DAY OF PRAYER
Since the 19th century, Christian women in the
United States and Canada have initiated cooperative activities in many areas of concern
for women and children, the role of prayer in mission work and the promotion of world
peace through involvement in mission work worldwide. The first organized day of prayer
held nationally was in Canada on January 9, 1920. In the United States, the first
organized day of prayer held nationally was on February 20, 1920.
Now, hundreds of thousands of women (and men, youth and children)
from around the world and in every region gather to collectively worship on the first
Friday in March. World Day of Prayer is supported by sacrificial and benevolent mission
offerings given by individuals through these annual services. Each of the 170 countries
celebrating World Day of Prayer has an organized country committee of ecumenical women
representing many cultures, races and faith traditions. Each countrys committee is
responsible for determining the use of the offering as it relates to the theme for each
year. Offering grants are made to women and childrens groups in each country.
Each year, a different country serves as the writer of the World
Day of Prayer worship service. This years theme UNITED UNDER GODS TENT was
written by the WDP Women of Paraguay.
You are invited to attend the World Day of Prayer on Friday, March
2, 2007 with other women in this area at the First Christian Church of Bonne Terre, 47 W.
Johnson Street, Bonne Terre. They will begin at 11:30am. For more information please call

LENTEN MESSAGE
OF OUR HOLY FATHER
BENEDICT XVI 2007
(CONTINUED)
Gods love: agape and eros
The term agape, which appears many times in the New Testament, indicates
the self-giving love of one who looks exclusively for the good of the other. The word eros,on one hand, denotes the love of one who
desires to possess what he or she lacks and yearns for union with the beloved. The love
with which God surrounds us is undoubtedly agape.
Indeed, can man give to God some good that He does not already possess? All that the human
creature is and has is divine gift. It is the creature then, who is in need of God in
everything.
But Gods love is also eros.
In the Old Testament, the Creator of the universe manifests toward the people whom He has
chosen aS His own a predilection that transcends every human motivation. The prophet Hosea
expresses this divine passion with daring images such as the love of a man for an
adulterous woman (cf. 3:1-3). For his part, Ezekiel, speaking of Gods relationship
with the people of Israel, is not afraid to use strong and passionate language (cf.
16:1-22). These biblical texts indicate that eros is part of Gods very heart: the Almighty
awaits the "yes" of His creatures as a young bridegroom that of his bride.
Unfortunately, from its very origins, mankind, seduced by the lies of he Evil One,
rejected Gods love in the illusion of a self-sufficiency that is impossible (cf. Gn
3:1-7). Turning in on himself, Adam withdrew from that source of life who is God Himself,
and became the first of "those who through fear of death were subject to lifelong
bondage" (Heb 2:15). God, however, did not give up. On the contrary, mans
"no" was the decisive impulse that moved Him to manifest His love in all of its
redeeming strength
ALL FRIDAYS OF LENT are days of abstinence from meat. Here again
Catholics will not hold themselves lightly excused.
