ST. ANNE CHURCH

Christmas will be a little brighter and more attractive this year because of our new statuary and creche. Russell Basler has taken the time and used his talents to provide the new crib. We should all give him a thank you as we wish him a happy and joyous Christmas this year.

The estate of Agnes Vargo has remembered our school and parish. Agnes will always be missed, but we can recall her lifetime of love and service to her parish. Please retain Agnes in your prayers.

The only thing we can be reasonably sure of is that Jesus was not born on December 25th. So, why do we celebrate then? Back in the sixth century, a Roman monk designed a way of designating years by "Before Christ"(BC) and "After Christ" (AD). The problem was that this monk did not have the advantage of the historical documents we have today. He missed the year of Christ’s birth by a few years. We still cannot pin it down exactly; but, most scholars believe Jesus was born between the years 8BC and 6BC.

In the early Church history, Christmas was not even celebrated. The focus was on Easter and the related feasts. The first time we see a mention of Christmas is in a Roman liturgical calendar composed in 339. By the end of that century, most of the Christian world was celebrating Christmas on December 25th.

Since we did not know this year, you may wonder how it was determined that Jesus was born on December 25th. Most scholars think that the church authorities of the time assigned the birth to the winter solstice, which marks when the days in the Northern Hemisphere begin to lengthen. In the Julian calendar, the solstice was on December 25th. In our calendar, it falls on December 21st and in the Egyptian calendar, it is January 6th. Pagans celebrated it as the birthday of the Unconquered Sun. During the 200’s the Roman Emperor Aurelian dedicated December 25th to the sun god. Since Christian writers often referred to Jesus as the Sun of Justice, the connection seemed logical. As a result, the date of the "newborn sun" was chosen as the birth date of Christ. The church took a very popular pagan feast and turned it into a Christian feast praising God.

It should not be upsetting to learn that we really have no exact date for Jesus birth. That is really a small detail. What we celebrate is the marvelous, unbelievable gift of God’s Word made flesh among us. This awesome gift should be celebrated every day; but we also need to have a special day to celebrate. The exact date of Jesus’ birth is not as important as our need to acknowledge and celebrate the gift of God’s Word made flesh.

Please welcome into our Parish family Nickolas Warren Tyler. May his family continue to be a source of strength and guidance as he makes his spiritual journey toward God.

As we go about celebrating the Christmas season let us take time from our busy schedules to remember all of our sick friends and relatives, the homeless and those less fortunate than ourselves, the men and women in our Armed Forces serving here at home and abroad also and for the repose of the souls of all who have gone before us. May their souls and all the souls of the faithful departed rest in peace.
