This is the First Sunday of Advent. In former times, we thought of today as the beginning of a new Church year.

Indeed, we do begin a new series or cycle of Scripture readings in our liturgy today. This year will be called "The Year of Matthew (Year C) since most of the Gospels will be taken from the Gospel according to Matthew.

But more properly, the Church "New Year" is Easter, when Christ made all things new by His death and resurrection.

Today begins a new liturgical season, the season of hope and expectation, the season of Advent.

The world may not know it, but it is looking for Christ. Our ultimate hope for this world is the glorious Coming of Christ to bring perfect justice and peace.

This weekend, as in years past, our Advent Giving Tree is in place in the front of Church. If you interested In participating, please select a
"Christmas card" from the tree, purchase the gift described on it, and wrap the gift with the Christmas card attached to the outside of the package. Your anonymous gift will bring joy to a needy child. Please leave your gift under the tree by December 17th.
