MATTHEW 5-7: HOW O BE HAPPY

WEEK 6 – WHICH HOUSE ARE YOU BUILDING?

Jesus began his sermon with the Beatitudes – with congratulations to the men and women who take his road through life and with assurance that the road He has shown us leads to happiness. The road that Jesus is recommending is full of risks. Jesus concludes the Sermon on the Mount with a warning. Not everyone who says to Him,"Lord, Lord," will enter the Kingdom, but only those who do the will of his Father in heaven.

If we hear the words of Jesus and act on them, we will be like the wise man who built his house on solid rock. If we hear the words of Jesus and do not act on them, we will be like the foolish man who built his house on the shifting sands. On which foundation are you building your house?

This will be our last week of Scripture study. We thank everyone who attended. Another study series will begin in the spring. We look forward to seeing our old faces and hope to see some new ones.

EUCHARISTIC ADORATION

On Friday, December 3, 2004 the Blessed Sacrament will be exposed on the main altar from 8:30a.m. until 4:00p.m. Benediction will begin at 5:00p.m. We are asked to stop by and spend a few minutes with Jesus. Eucharistic adoration is offered every Friday from 5:00p.m. to 6:00p.m. with the Rosary beginning at 6:00p.m.

With the advent of the flu season and the lack of availability of flu vaccine, it is important that we be sensitive to the ways in which the influenza virus can be transmitted and also to the concerns about its transmission among the faithful, especially the elderly, for whom the virus poses the greatest danger. Apart from attention to general hygiene which prevents the spread of the virus, we need to be attentive to two concerns involving the Sacred Liturgy, namely the possibility of spreading the virus through the contact with the chalice in the distribution of the Precious Blood.

Regarding the sign of peace, it is true that the flu virus is commonly communicated from one person to another through the hands. Normally, the sign of peace, which in our country is given by a handshake, should be given. During the flu season, however, it would be prudent to ask the faithful to be sensitive to anyone who does not wish to give the sign of peace because he or she is not feeling well and does not want to pass on a possible flu virus or because he or she is at high risk. At Masses with many elderly or with many who are suffering from colds and the flu, for example, school children, it may be best simply to suspend the sign of peace by the handshake.

Regarding the communication of the Precious Blood, there is always some question about whether the flu virus can be passed by the contact of the lips with the chalice. In any case, many faithful are quite sensitive in the matter. During the flu season, I recommend that the faithful be reminded regularly that they receive the whole Christ in both of the sacred species and, therefore, are not obligated to receive the Precious Blood, if they are not feeling well or have a fear of contacting the flu. Again, if the congregation is mostly elderly or has many persons suffering from symptoms of a cold or the flu, it may be most prudent to distribute only the Sacred Host. At St. Joseph and St. Anne we will continue to offer the Blessed Sacrament in both forms at all the Masses. You can chose to receive both kinds.
