TODAY’S READING

In today's gospel reading, Jesus speaks of two events at the same time. The destruction of the temple and the end of time. The first was to be a time for fleeing; there can be no flight from the second. The first would come soon. Jesus refrains from predicting the time of the second. Perhaps Jesus was on the slopes of the Mount of Olives, looking down on the temple. How could they imagine the destruction of all this? The second event, the end of the world is also beyond all imagination. For most of us, the end will come with personal death. It does us well to meditate on what the catechism calls "The Four Last Things: death, judgment, heaven and hell.

Catholic Campaign
For Human Development

Today, as we participate in the collection for the Catholic Campaign for Human Development, we respond to the Gospel call to reach out in solidarity and love as Jesus did.

Your gifts helps people as they work together to solve community problems, strengthen their families, create jobs and build affordable housing. Please respond generously.

TAKING RISKS

To laugh is to risk appearing a fool.
To weep is to risk appearing sentimental.
To reach out for another is to risk involvement. To expose feelings is to risk rejection. To place your dreams before the crowd is to risk ridicule. To love is to risk not being loved in return. To go forward in the face of overwhelming odds is to risk failure. But risks must be taken because the greatest hazard in life is to risk nothing. The person who risks nothing, has nothing, is nothing. He may avoid suffering and sorrow, but he cannot learn, feel, change, grow of love. Chained by his certiudes, he is a slave. He has forfeited his freedom. Only a person who takes risks is free. by "Edgar Gibson Jr.
