Father Liss also added that if you cannot be present, you are welcome to send in prayer intentions.

STEM CELL RESEARCH
AND HUMAN CLONING

Haven’t doctors, scientist, and commentators said that embryonic stem cell research will lead to the cure of many diseases?

Some have made this claim, but in fact this is largely speculation. Embryonic stem cells have never treated a human patient, and animal trials suggest that they are too genetically unstable and too likely to form lethal tumors to be used for treatment any time soon. Years ago it was said that stem cells from embryos would be the most useful because they are so fast growing and versatile, able to make virtually any kind of cell. But those advantages become disadvantages when these cells make tumors, creating a condition worse than the disease. Yet many supports remain wedded to this approach, having invested a great deal of money and effort and hoping they can still make it work. This kind of exaggerated "promise" has mislead researchers and patient groups before, most obviously in the case of fetal tissue from abortions, which a decade ago was said to promise miracle cures and has produced nothing of the kind.

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

"What good is it, my brothers and sisters, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Saint James challenges us with these words in today’s Second Reading. He tells us that we must demonstrate our faith with our works.

On this annual Stewardship Awareness Sunday, we are asked to reflect on the question: How do I demonstrate my faith?

When we look at our parish communities, our schools, our praise and worship of God, our apostolates and our social outreach, we see a clear demonstration of faith. I sincerely thank all of you who give so generously to ensure that in every community throughout the Archdiocese of Saint Louis, God is worshipped and glorified, His ways are taught, and His compassion is experienced.

However, we cannot become complacent. It is important to remember that God is a generous and loving Father who entrusts abundant blessings into our hands as His good stewards. He calls us to give back more in gratitude for all that has been given to us. Today, I pray that the Holy Spirit will guide you in considering three ways in which you may be able to do more:

  1. Can you spend more time with Our Lord, possible adding more prayer, worship or spiritual readings to your week?

  2. Can you share more of your special talents, possible becoming involved in one of the many volunteer works in your parish community?

  3. Can you give more of your financial gifts to support the building of God’s kingdom, possibly increasing your contribution to the Offertory, to special funds or with a planned gift?

I ask you to demonstrate your faith by pledging, if at all possible, to do more for God in the coming year with the gifts of your time, your talent and your treasure, all of which are His gifts to you.

I pray that your faithfulness and generosity will be rewarded with the joy and peace that comes to those who follow Our Lord’s call to stewardship.

Asking God’s blessing upon you and your home, I remain

Yours devotedly in Christ,

(Most Rev.) Raymond L. Burke
