PREVENTING A STROKE IN AS LITTLE AS 10 MINUTES!!
Life Line Screening will be performing a day of preventative
health screenings at St. Joseph Catholic church on Friday, August 18, 2006.The tests
offered include a state of the art ultrasound screening of the carotid arteries in the
neck (most strokes are linked to plaque build-up in these arteries), another ultrasound
screening of the abdominal aortic aneurysm (ruptured AAAs have a 85-94% mortality
rate and present little or no signs), a third test which screens for plaque build-up in
the arteries of the legs (a strong indicator of coronary heart disease) and a fourth bone
density which screens for signs of osteoporosis." Why not just go to my doctor for
these tests?" you may ask. The answer, although surprising, is that your physician
typically cannot order these tests without a clear evidence of symptoms. Ironically, most
people who suffer a stroke or abdominal aneurysm never show any signs that a major medical
catastrophe is about to occur. These painless, non-invasive tests take about 10 minutes
each and are offered for just $45 each (all four for $129.00). YOU MUST PRE-REGISTER by
calling 1-800-324-1851.
NATIONAL COLLECTION
FOR THE ARCHDIOCESE OF NEW ORLEANS AND THE DIOCESE OF BILOXI
The Archdiocese of New Orleans and the Diocese of Biloxi
are still reeling from the catastrophic devastation caused by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita.
In the Diocese of Biloxi, 428 of the 433 Church-owned structures were destroyed or
severely damaged, with insurance covering only $35,000,000.00 of the more than
$70,000,000.00 in destruction. The Archdiocese of New Orleans suffers from $122,000,000.00
of uninsured damages to its Church-owned structures. While the original collection for
hurricane relief raised more than $130,000,000.00, most of that went for immediate
humanitarians needs. The Bishops in the United States have authorized a special collection
for these two dioceses to be taken up on August 26-27, 2006. Archbishop Raymond Burke asks
that every parish take up a second collection on August 26-27, 2006, for these two
dioceses and encourages all of our faithful to be as generous as possible.
PARISH SCHOOL OF RELIGION (PSR)
PSR registration will begin Saturday, August 12th.
2006. Forms will be available at the back of the church. Please complete the forms and
leave them at the back of the church or turn them into the rectory office. Thus year we
will be offering Confirmation preparation classes for students entering grades seven
through twelve and participated in a Catholic education program for the past two years.
For more information call Jamie Weiss at 431-8012.
STEM CELL RESEARCH AND HUMAN CLONING,
Questions and Answers
What is a stem cell?
A stem cell is a relatively unspecialized cell that, when
it divides, can do two things: make another cell like itself, or make any of a number of
cells with more specialized functions. For example, just one kind of stem cell in our
blood can make new red blood cells, or white blood cells, or other kinds depending
on what the body needs. |
