I SAID A PRAYER FOR YOUR TODAY
I
said a prayer for you today
And know God must have heard-
I felt the answer in my heart
Although He spoke no word!
I didn’t ask for wealth or fame
(I knew you wouldn’t mind) –
I asked Him to send treasures
Of a far more lasting kind!
I asked that He’d be near you
At the start of each new day
To grant you health and blessings
And friends to share your way!
I asked for happiness for you In all things great and small – But it was for His
loving care I prayed the most of all!

ST.
ANNECHURCH,
FRENCH VILLAGE, MO.
ON THE COLLECTION FOR THE LATIN AMERICA APOSTOLATE
Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,
Since my appointment as Archbishop of St. Louis,
I have been aware of our Latin America Apostolate of the Archdiocese. In 1956, Archbishop Joseph Ritter became the first
Bishop of the United States to send diocesan priests as foreign missionaries. Since 1956, the main focus of our Latin American
Apostolate has been the country of Bolivia. Bolivia
was selected not only because of its severe shortage of priests, where there is fewer that
one priest for every 40,000 Catholics, but also because it is one of the poorest countries
in our hemisphere.
Currently there are five priests of the
Archdiocese who serve as missionaries in Bolivia: three
in La Paz, at Maria Reina Parish, and two in the Vicriate of the Pando. Maria Reina has over 70,000 Catholics in thirteen
distinct neighborhoods. The priests in Maria
Reine Parish also take turns in celebrating Masses and other Sacraments in St. James
Parish in Calamarca, sixty miles outside La Paz. There
are forty villages in the one parish of St. James, and no resident priest. The other two priests from St. Louis serve in the
Pando Vicariate, in the steamy tropical rainforest near Brazil. One of these priests is Bishop Morgan Casey, of
whom I have recently written in my column in the St. Louis Review.
While the principal aim of these missionaries is
the proclamation of the Gospel and the celebration of the Sacraments, they cannot ignore
the physical needs of the people they serve. Many
people suffer from malnutrition and various diseases do to the extreme poverty. Our missionary presence in Bolivia not only
nourishes people with the Word of God, but also enables them to receive access to food and
medical care.
In more recent years there are also two priests
of the Archdiocese who serve in the Central American country of Belize. The severe clergy shortage, coupled with the need
for better access to education, has made our missionary presence there a source of hope
for many.
Please be generous next Sunday in the annual
collection for the Latin America Apostolate so that our missionary priests can continue to
serve the people of God in Bolivia and Belize. I
thank you in advance for your generous response.
Asking God’s blessing upon your home, I
remain
Yours devotedly in Christ,
(Most Rev.) Raymond L. Burke
Archbishop of St. Louis
FOOD FOR THE POOR, INC
Please join us in welcoming Rev. Gus Gordon. Father Gordon will speak at all the liturgies
about a ministry providing a direct relief to the poor throughout Latin America and the
Caribbean.
Father Gordon will share what he has witnessed
about Food For The Poor’s mission to care for the destitute as a means of living out
the Gospel mandate to love one another.
Father Gordon was ordained in 1969 and belongs
to the Archdiocese of Castries in St. Lucia. He
worked with a hands-on-ministry in Alabama and has preached on behalf of Food For The Poor
for 17 years.
