DO WE NEED A SACRAMENT OF RECONCILIATION?
We forgive one another in our families, right? We are
forgiven in the early part of each Mass, yes? There is forgiveness of sin in every
reception of Holy Communion, right? Then why, as a community, do we have, in addition, a
Sacrament of Reconciliation?
As Jesus very own people we try our best to learn from him.
He was a forgiving person. So, as a community we ought to be known as a forgiving
community. For this we need all the help we can get!
Now and then you and I manage to forgive a deep injury done us
and it takes effort. (We even feel a bit heroic when we manage it!) These separate
acts of forgiving help us to become forgiving people. So does the Eucharist. The early
part of Mass reminds us that we need to be forgiven, too.
Now comes the sacrament. It does two things: first, it publicly
celebrates the fact that we are constantly being forgiven by God, that as a people we live
in an "ocean" of forgiveness. (This fact can slip away from consciousness rather
quickly!) Second, that sacrament makes us into forgivers. We receive a special help to be
a forgiving people, forgiving individuals, when we need to be.
This sacrament is a great gift. It can make us into the kind of
people our family and the world needs. We owe it to ourselves and one another not to
neglect it.
