The value of marriage is not that adults produce children but that children produce adults.

Don’t Worry!! Be Happy!!

Worry has many different meanings. It comes from an Old English word that means to CHOKE or STRANGLE. Ever looked at it that way before? Then I remembered one of those types of seeds that grew in the parable. It grew up with weeds that choked it. Imagine yourself growing with vines wrapped around you so that you cannot move. That’s what worry does. It keeps us from growing FREE. Another meaning is to ‘tear at with teeth’. Even worse. Always picking at something. Those ‘worry warts’. Another meaning: ‘to cause TORMENT’ Doesn’t worry do just that? Worry bothers us so much, that we lose all of our happiness. And a final meaning: ‘ to FOCUS our attention on something’. Kind of like losing focus. Then I remembered the St. Peter story of Jesus calling him to walk on water. He was fine until he lost focus and began to worry about the water. He began to sink!

We are all familiar with the Martha/Mary story in the gospel. There is a constant struggle within us. There is part of us that so wants to sit at the feet of Jesus and then there’s the Martha – in – us that gets bogged down with trivialities. Jesus wants us to keep our focus.

A story is told about a man who constantly worried. He would toss and turn all night. Finally, one night, in a dream, Jesus appeared to him and said, ‘Go to sleep. I will stay up all night and worry for you.’

My mother prayed the rosary every day. She called them her free beads. When she focused on the beads, when she focused on Jesus, and that is what the rosary really does, all the worries left her – at least for the moment. To worry or not is a CHOICE.

A friend of mine has his beads in the car. He ‘works his beads’. Sometimes he gets through all 20 decades. The joyful, sorrowful, glorious, and luminous. Staying focused.

WORKING those beads. Not a bad thing! It might not be a bad thing to keep our rosary in our pocket or purse and WORK those beads. WORK on being Mary, sitting at the feet of Jesus. WORK on being Mary, saying yes to the will of God, which is to be focused on Jesus, so that we can be FREE of worry.

WORK THOSE BEADS!

DON’T WORRY BE HAPPY!

DON’T WORRY BE FREE!
