Catholic Communications Campaign

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,

The Catholic Communication Campaign, in partnership with Archdiocese Office of Communications, has supported, for 25 years, projects, on both the national and local level, to ensure that the Catholic faith is communicated through the media.

The Catholic Communications Campaign is funded solely through an annual parish collection. Half of the contributions to the Catholic Communications Campaign support local projects such as the Office of Communications of the Archdiocese of Saint Louis, which provides communications/media support for our parishes, schools, offices and agencies, and the website of the Archdiocese of Saint Louis, which is accessed by thousands of people every day. On the parish level, for example, the funds from the Catholic Communications Campaign help to fund the broadcasting of a Sunday Mass at the Church of Ste. Genevieve on local radio and television.

The other half of the contributions support the Catholic Communications Campaign’s national activities, including the providing of audio recordings of the daily reading from the New American Bible for online listening or podcast download; the For Your Marriage campaign – television and radio Public Service Announcements and a Web site designed to celebrate marriage and provide resources and support for those living the vocation to the married life; the TV special, Picturing Mary, airing on many public television station since December 2006; Lenten radio retreats; and the expansion of www. CatholicCommunicationCampaign.org, with information on TV and radio programs, steaming video, movie and TV reviews, interviews, and inspiring stories of faith in action.

In his message for this year’s World Communications Day, our Holy Father Pope Benedict XVI notes that "humanity today is at a crossroads." He applies to the media what he wrote about the ambiguity of progress which "offers new possibilities for good, but at the same time opens up appalling possibilities for evil that formerly did not exist" (Pope Benedict XVI, Spe Salvi, no. 22, in " The Media: At the Crossroads between Self-Promotion and Service. Searching for the Truth in order to Share it with Others," no.3). Our Holy Father continues: " Should it not be a priority to ensure that they [the media] remain at the service of the person and of the common good, and that they foster ‘man’s’ ethical formation…man’s inner growth’ (Spe Salvi,no.22)?"

REGARDING THE COLLECTION FOR THE CATHOLIC COMMUNICATIONS CAMPAIGN

Your generous support of the Catholic Communications Campaign will ensure the continued availability of media resources, which will promote Catholic teaching and will serve the person and the common good.

Invoking God’s blessing upon you and your homes, I remain

Yours devotedly in Christ,

(Most Rev.) Raymond L. Burke
Archbishop of Saint Louis
