MATTHEW 26-28:
JESUS’ LIFE-GIVING DEATH

WEEK 6 – ALLELUIA!

The earth trembled and an angel moved away the stone that blocked the entrance to Jesus’ tomb, revealing that the tomb was empty.  “Be not afraid,” the angel told the two women who were present, for death has been conquered.  Jesus has been raised from the dead!

The risen Lord sent His disciples forth into their ministry from Galilee, where His own ministry had begun. His disciples were to go out from Galilee to tell the whole world that the kingdom of God had begun to arrive in Jesus’ death and resurrection.  With divine authority, Jesus commissioned the disciples to spread the good news of forgiveness and eternal life.

RITE OF CHRISTIAN INTIATION OF ADULTS: THE SCRUTINIES

Today the catechumens will experience the second of three scrutinies.

In order to inspire in the elect a desire of purification and redemption by Christ, three scrutinies are celebrated.   By this means, first of all, the elect are instructed gradually about the mystery of sin, from which the whole world and every person longs to be delivered and thus saved from its present and future consequences.  Second, their spirit is filled with Christ the Redeemer, who is the living water (gospel of the Samaritan woman on the first scrutiny), the light of the world (gospel of the man born blind in the second scrutiny) the resurrection and the life (gospel of Lazarus in the third scrutiny).  From the first to the final scrutiny the elect should progress in their perception of sin and their desire for salvation.
