Lector----------------------- R. Kleekamp SUNDAY MASS: FEB. 17 AT 10:00A.M. Lector------------------------- Rebecca ST. ANNE MASS: FEB. 17 AT 8:30A.M. Lector---------------------------D. Schmitt Wednesday, February 13, is Ash Wednesday, and the beginning of Lent. Masses and distribution of ashes will be at 8:00a.m and 5:00p.m at St. Joseph, 10:00a.m. at St. Joe Manor, and 6:30p.m. at St. Anne. The Church has always helped us fulfill the words of Jesus "Whoever wishes to be my follower must deny his very self, take up his cross each day, and follow in my steps" (Luke 9:23) by prescribing very definite penance for all Catholics. Accordingly, the Pope and the American bishops have outlined obligatory fast and abstinence as follows: Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are days of abstinence for all Catholics over the age of 14. Fast as well as abstinence is obligatory for those from the ages of 18 to 59. Abstinence means abstinence from meat. Fast means one full meal a day, with two other small meals and nothing between meals. No Catholic will lightly excuse himself or herself from this obligation. All other Fridays of Lent are days of abstinence from meat. Here again, Catholics will not hold themselves lightly excused, but if there is a serious health problem, this obligation would not apply. We should strive to make all days the of Lent a time of prayer and penance. Bingo Figures for January 29, 2002 CHURCH CLEANING SCHEDULE February 15 J. Counts, B. Lent 2002 Dear Friends in Christ, "Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem" (Mark 10:33) With these words, the Lord invites the disciples to journey with Him on the path that leads from Galilee to the place where He will complete His redemptive mission. As we begin our Lenten journey, Christ also invites us with special force to "go up to Jerusalem" with Him by sharing in His Death and Resurrection. For all of us, Lent becomes the appropriate time to re-examine our life and to respond to Christs invitation to conversion of heart. Trusting in the merciful love of God, I would like personally to invite each of you to take part in the Reconciliation Weekend which will be held throughout the Archdiocese of Friday and Saturday, March 15 and 16. This is a special opportunity to experience Gods love and to prepare for the celebration of the Resurrection of Jesus Christ. HUMAN CLONING Human cloning is an effort to create humans as "copies" of other humans. It is done by taking genetic material from a persons body cell and injecting it into an egg, which is then stimulated to begin embryonic development. The cloned embryo is almost identical genetically to the person whose body cell was used. Please dont forget to contact Senator Bond and Senator Carnahan in Washington, D.C. and urge them to support the Human Cloning Prohibition Act (S. 790, H.R. 2505) |

STOP LOOK LISTEN Do you know the history of Valentines Day? Look at our new web page at www.valentinesday.mustbehere.com. and learn how it began with the works of a Catholic priest. St. Joseph St. Anne IN YOUR DAILY PRAYERS As your go about your daily life please remember to pray for vocations to the priesthood and religious life, and to pray for the intentions of our Holy Father. Let us also pray for peace and justice and pray for the quick return to our Parish family of Elmer Deterding, Dave Knotts, Dorothy DeManuele who are presently in the hospital. Lent is a time for a renewal of our spiritual and physical life. As we begin our Lenten journey, let us pray for spiritual and physical healing. GODS MERCIFUL LOVE Gods Merciful Love is the name of a six-week adult religious education and faith formation program that explores the Sacrament of Reconciliation. The program will be offered this Lent to adults and young adults in parishes throughout the Archdiocese. It will be a powerful way for all the adults of our parish to learn more about and deepen their appreciation for the experience of Gods mercy in the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Gods Merciful Love begins this week. The Parable of the Prodigal Son is a parable of sin and reconciliation. When we sin we wander away and separate ourselves from our Father in heaven. We squander our inheritance by wasting the gifts that God has given each of us for serving Him and for glorifying Him, and for our own happiness. Our Father is waiting for each of us to come back home. It is not too late to join a group. There will be a group on Tuesday mornings, immediately after Mass, led by Louise Sickman in the Church meeting room. Father John and Deacon Ron will lead a group on Wednesday morning after Mass. Make a commitment this Lent to come to Mass in the morning and to study, to reflect, and to share faith in a small-group setting. If you wish you may do so privately in your home. Stewardship is being responsible for the gifts that God has given to each one of us. People might receive the impression that Stewardship of Time and Talent means only "Lay Ministry"; engaging in the many forms of service open to lay people in todays Church. Lay Ministry is of major importance. However, it will never be a full-time pursuit for but a handful of lay people. Most people exercise their Stewardship of Time and Talent in daily life. Everyday work at home and on the job, Monday through Saturday, is a genuine exercise of Stewardship. The Church exists to inspire and empower its members to fulfill their baptismal commission: "To be the worlds salt, leaven and light vital ingredients which, even when small in quantity, make all the difference in quality" Yours in Christ, Father John If you have not tried CiCis Pizza in Farmington, you have missed a great place to eat and the price is economical! They have agreed to designate the second Monday of the month to St. Joseph Church and School in Bonne Terre from 3:00p.m. until closing. Just mention St. Josephs name at the register and we will receive 10% of the receipts recorded that evening. I encourage you to enjoy the good food, have a night out with your family and help our wonderful School! Father John |
